Indonesia's Light-Duty Vehicle Market in September: BYD Ranks Third as Small BEVs Disrupt the Japanese ICE Base

Bob From Gasgoo
According to Gasgoo Data, Indonesia's light-duty vehicle market logged 69,507 sales in September 2026, up 22.2% year on year (down 3.4% month on month). Chinese brands posted a total of 16,540 sales, with their combined market share surging to 23.8%, as small BEVs emerged as the biggest growth driver.
BYD topped Chinese brands with 6,031 units, ranking third overall (up 454.3% year on year); its Atto 1 (4,840 units) remained the best-selling electrified model and ranked second among all models. Indonesia's electrification penetration reached 25.0% (BEV 23.1%), as Chinese brands accelerated their assault on the Japanese ICE base with a "small BEVs + CKD localization" approach.

Brand Landscape

Toyota (21,872 units, up 5.5% year on year) and Daihatsu (11,558 units, up 9.0% year on year) held the top two positions, underscoring the resilience of the Japanese ICE base. BYD (6,031 units) broke into third place overall, followed by Suzuki (5,316 units) and Mitsubishi (4,661 units). OMODA & JAECOO (3,586 units, up 770.4%), Geely (2,273 units, up 1,347.8%) and Wuling (2,031 units, up 51.7%) all cracked the top ten, as Chinese brands gained ground across multiple fronts.

Electrification

BEV+PHEV penetration reached 25.0% (BEV 23.1%, PHEV 1.9%), while HEV and MHEV models accounted for a further 11.3% and ICE vehicles still dominated at 63.7%. BEV share is climbing rapidly, led by BYD's Atto 1 and the Jaecoo J5 EV (3,276 units), with small BEVs becoming the core growth increment.

Chinese Automaker Dynamics

BYD: With 6,031 units, No. 1 among Chinese brands and third overall. Atto 1 single-handedly propels sales, keeping BYD ahead in electrified models, though the range remains skewed.
OMODA & JAECOO: With 3,586 units sold, Jaecoo J5 EV hit the ground running, taking over Chery-group volume and surging 770.4% year-on-year.
Geely: Fueled by EX2 volume, Geely surged 1,347.8% year-on-year, successfully replicating the small-BEV playbook.
Wuling: One of the earliest Chinese entrants in Indonesia, anchoring entry-level commuter demand with the Air and Bingo, up 51.7% year on year though growth is decelerating.
MG: Transitioning from the MG 4 EV to the MG S5 EV, sales climbed to 761 units, with the transformation delivering notable results.
XPENG: Pursuing a full CKD strategy with the G6 and X9 assembled locally across all variants, posting 454 monthly sales.

Strategic Outlook

Japanese ICE vehicles still account for roughly half of Indonesia's market, yet the Chinese-brand share of 23.8% has already become a disruptive force. BYD's 454% surge and the Atto 1's runner-up finish among all models confirm that small BEVs are the spearhead for prying open Indonesia's commuter market. But small cars alone cannot break through the Japanese MPV and hybrid stronghold; a three-pronged approach of "small-car volume + CKD localization + MPV/hybrid scenario coverage" is needed to convert the 23.8% share into a long-term foothold, building manufacturing and channel moats within the window of 23.1% BEV penetration.
