JD.com Breaks Ground on Its First Global RoboBase Project in Guangzhou

Edited by Aya From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- The Guangdong provincial government and JD.com recently signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement in Guangzhou's Huangpu District, marking the simultaneous groundbreaking for JINGDONG Property's RoboBase project. The agreement covers nine key sectors—including consumer goods, logistics, the digital economy, and smart healthcare—with RoboBase standing as the first physical project to materialize under the deal.

Located in Guangzhou Science City, the project spans a gross floor area of approximately 190,000 square meters. It integrates diverse functions—ranging from R&D and manufacturing to pilot testing, headquarters, and exhibition. The facility is slated for completion by late 2028, with production starting in 2029 and full capacity targeted for 2030, aiming for an annual output value of 1.75 billion yuan. According to JD, this marks the company's first global RoboBase hub for robotics, serving as the core vehicle for its "Robotics & AI" strategy over the next five years. The goal is to construct a closed-loop ecosystem spanning "R&D—Manufacturing—Application—Service."

However, JINGDONG Property has clarified that it does not intend to manufacture robots directly. Instead, it positions itself as an "industrial infrastructure operator," serving upstream and downstream players across four dimensions: supply chain, technology, application scenarios, and capital. Whether this asset-light, empowerment-heavy model can carve out a competitive edge in the crowded robotics sector remains to be seen.

More than 30 companies, including AGIBOT, Leju Robotics, and GAC Robotics, attended the event. Additionally, 10 vocational institutions in Guangdong signed agreements for industry-education integration programs, underscoring a push for collaboration across government, enterprise, and academia. Huangpu District followed up by releasing new AI policies and a list of application scenarios, further signaling its commitment to industrial support.

Collaboration between Guangdong and JD.com dates back years; the Huangpu District alone hosts 17 JD-affiliated enterprises with cumulative revenue exceeding 115 billion yuan. This expansion from commercial retail into advanced manufacturing marks a strategic pivot by JD toward hard tech—one that aligns with Guangdong's broader ambition to lead in "embodied intelligence." Yet, with robotics investment cycles running long and implementation scenarios proving complex, it remains to be seen whether RoboBase can hit its capacity targets in four years and successfully foster a clustered ecosystem.
