Li Bin: China's NEV Landscape May Take Shape in Next 3-5 Years

Gasgoo Munich-On August 22, at the 2026 FDSM Sci-Tech Innovation Forum with China's Chief Economists, NIO founder, Chairman, and CEO Li Bin offered his take on the state of China's new-energy vehicle sector. His assessment is stark: competition is reaching a boiling point, and the industry is entering four distinct new phases of development.

蔚来李斌:汽车行业进入决赛最残酷的竞争阶段

In Li's view, the sector is first entering the most brutal phase of the final. The roster of surviving automakers will essentially be set within the next three to five years, with the coming two representing a critical window. Every player now faces a practical test: can they keep pace with the industry's rhythm, or will they be eliminated by the market?

The second phase involves an accelerated rise in pure-electric penetration. Li noted that looking at this year's domestic market performance, only battery-electric vehicles managed positive sales growth, while plug-in hybrids, extended-range electrics, and internal combustion engine cars all saw declines. He attributes this to a dual inflection point: the iteration of pure-electric technology and the build-out of charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. His "pure-electric inflection point theory," proposed last year, has now been validated by this year's sales figures.

Third, the industry is shifting from a period of brand chaos to one of brand clarification. As automotive technology converges and the experience across different products becomes increasingly similar, consumer logic is changing. Buyers are no longer simply comparing specifications and configurations; instead, brand weight is rising. A habit of prioritizing brand is taking shape, marking a return to the consumption patterns typical of traditional automotive markets.

Fourth, market competition is evolving from a contest of individual capabilities to a clash of entire systems. Li stated that the era when a single technology or one standout strength could secure market advantage is over. Today, automakers must compete across the board—in R&D, supply chains, manufacturing, quality control, sales and service, and capital markets. It is akin to a marathon run on a muddy road, testing the long-term survival capability of every enterprise.
