Gasgoo Munich- Melexis has established a wholly foreign-owned enterprise in China, named Melexis Integrated Circuits (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., marking a new phase in the company's localization strategy, according to a post on Melexis' WeChat account.

The move reflects a broader restructuring of its regional organization and signals a strengthened long-term commitment to the Chinese market, which the semiconductor supplier views as a key driver of global growth.

Setting up a wholly owned subsidiary represents a central element of Melexis' localization strategy for 2026. The structure provides an organizational foundation for advancing end-to-end localized manufacturing, while enabling the company to operate as an independent legal entity in China and conduct transactions in renminbi.

The company is also expanding its local supply chain, aiming to establish a fully integrated ecosystem spanning design, manufacturing, and product delivery. Such localization is intended to enable faster responses to market demand. While automotive electronics remain a core focus for Melexis, the firm is increasingly targeting emerging sectors such as robotics, which it sees as offering significant long-term growth potential.

By operating through a wholly owned subsidiary, Melexis aims to combine the agility of a local company with the global standards and security frameworks typical of an international semiconductor innovator, creating a competitive advantage in the rapidly evolving Chinese technology ecosystem.

As part of the transformation, the company has also formed a dedicated "Melexis China" team designed to operate with a high degree of regional autonomy. The structure is intended to strengthen decision-making authority for local teams and ensure that insights from the Chinese market play a more influential role in shaping the company's global strategy.

Under the new framework, Melexis aims to strengthen its market position through several strategic priorities. These include empowering local talent capable of operating in close alignment with global strategy while maintaining operational agility in China. The company also plans to expand its local research and innovation capabilities to provide solutions tailored to the specific needs of the Chinese market. In addition, Melexis intends to align its operational pace more closely with the rapid innovation cycles typical of China's technology sector by deepening partnerships with local industry players.

A notable aspect of the strategic shift is the creation of a dedicated robotics team within the China organization. The specialized unit will focus on accelerating the launch of products designed for robotic applications, targeting what the company views as one of the world's most dynamic markets for automation technologies. Beyond chip-level solutions, the team aims to expand its offerings toward modular system-level products and localized innovation tailored to the needs of Chinese customers.

The newly established subsidiary will be headquartered in Shanghai. The legal and organizational restructuring is intended to position Melexis closer to one of the world's most dynamic semiconductor markets while ensuring that the perspectives and needs of Chinese customers play a stronger role in shaping the company's global business direction.

According to Marc Biron, CEO of Melexis, establishing the Shanghai-based entity represents a decisive step toward strengthening the company's strategic presence in Asia and China. The move will allow the company to respond more effectively to major technology trends such as electrification and robotics. Greater operational autonomy, he noted, will enable the firm to move at "China speed," aligning innovation more closely with local demand while supporting continued growth in its global business.
