Mitsubishi begins recalling imported Outlander SUVs in China

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai June 5) - Mitsubishi will begin two recalls of its imported Outlander SUV in China today, having already sent notifications to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Gasgoo.com (Chinese) reported. The first recall will target 4,460 Outlanders manufactured between mid November 2012 and late March 2013, while the second will target 214 Outlanders manufactured between early December 2012 and late March 2013.

The first batch of Outlanders (pictured) is being recalled due to a flaw with the microcomputer controlling the vehicles' power steering system. The circuit in the microcomputer's power monitor has a risk of malfunction, preventing the vehicle's power steering assist from turning on and causing a potential safety risk.

Outlanders covered in the second recall suffer from two flaws. The first refers to a design flaw in the auto parts used by the vehicles' autonomous cruise control and forward collision mitigation systems. When driven in tunnels or other areas with soundproof walls, the systems may mistakenly act as though a crash is impending, which can prevent them from acting properly. The second is a design flaw with the electronic control unit in the vehicle's Electronic Timing/Alarm Control System in which several of the vehicle's emergency lights will not activate in certain situations.

Mitsubishi, via its certified dealerships in the country, will conduct free maintenance and repair of all recalled vehicles. The manufacturer has already begun contacting owners of affected vehicles to schedule appointment times.
