August was another good month for the new vehicle industry, with 6800 new cars sold during the month (up 0.1% on August 2006), along with 2176 new commercial vehicles (up 1.4% on the same month last year). Year to date, the new car market is running 1.6% ahead of last year, with new commercial vehicles ahead by 4.1%.

“The new vehicle industry has enjoyed a bouyant winter,” said Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association, “and is well on track to post the second 100,000 plus year since the start of the postnineties recovery. It’s a competitive market out there, and clearly consumers are responding to the value on offer.”

Toyota continues to build a strong lead in both the new car and commercial vehicle markets. Ford maintains second overall in total vehicles, but Holden holds a strong second place in passenger cars. Holden Commodore continues to stretch its lead over Toyota Corolla as the country’s top-selling car model.
