Gasgoo Munich- NIO has brought the world's first zero-carbon, off-grid solar-and-storage battery swap station into operation at Xingxingxia in Xinjiang, the company announced Sept. 23. The site marks NIO's first real-world test of off-grid swapping. Powered entirely by solar, the setup forms a closed "generate-store-use" loop — shouldering the station's full electricity demand without tapping the external grid.

Xingxingxia sits deep in the Gobi Desert of eastern Xinjiang, where conditions are punishing: winds exceed force 8 on more than 100 days a year, summer surface temperatures top 70℃, and winter lows plunge to -30℃. Grid coverage there is sparse. Extending traditional power lines across miles of barren Gobi would be slow and expensive, making an off-grid solar-and-storage setup the far more practical route.
Technically, the station runs on a LONGi BLOCK mobile energy unit and a LONGi H2D storage system. The setup automatically shifts between three modes based on sunlight: daytime solar power with surplus stored, nighttime discharge from batteries, and an emergency mode during extended overcast spells that reserves power for critical loads — all without human oversight. Liquid-cooled temperature controls and rugged enclosures keep the system running smoothly through the Gobi extremes, ensuring 24/7 swapping service.
The site also paves the way for NIO's Silk Road swapping corridor to fully open. Slated for a Sept. 26 launch, the 3,605-km route will feature 33 swap stations. Once complete, drivers will be able to set out from any NIO station in the country and reach every provincial-level region in mainland China on swaps alone.
As of Sept. 23, 2026, NIO had deployed 9,410 charging and swapping stations across China — including 4,109 swap stations and 5,301 charging stations — topping the industry in total footprint. Its highway network now spans 1,060 swap stations, weaving together 9 vertical, 11 horizontal, and 16 major-city-cluster expressway corridors to link over 550 cities. Since last August, the company has also opened 92 "Power Journey" scenic routes, with plans to reach 100 by 2026.
