Schaeffler Starts Production of Hybrid Transmissions in Taicang for PHEV/HEV Models of Major International Automakers

Edited by Taylor From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich-Schaeffler officially began production of its hybrid transmissions (DHT) in Taicang, Jiangsu province, on March 9. This family of DHT products will power plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid electric (HEV) models from major international automakers, primarily targeting the Chinese and European markets. The move further strengthens Schaeffler's global footprint in the hybrid sector.

The mass-produced Schaeffler hybrid transmission utilizes a common platform design compatible with both PHEV and HEV architectures, catering to diverse market demands while bridging the gap between China's PHEV sector and the global HEV market. Leveraging Schaeffler's technical expertise in hybrids, the system is optimized around drive efficiency. By aligning with the engine's high-efficiency zones, it improves fuel economy to meet the rigors of both daily commutes and long-distance highway travel.

Notably, Schaeffler integrated global technical resources with local Chinese R&D capabilities during the product's development. The Chinese team spearheaded the development and implementation of the electric control and motor solutions, boosting both power performance and efficiency. The entire process—from design to mass-production validation—took just over a year, highlighting the responsiveness and technical prowess of the local R&D system.

As a key manufacturing hub for Schaeffler in China, the Taicang facility underpins the localized production of this DHT. The product has achieved full localization of both the complete unit and its supply chain, effectively bringing domestic suppliers into the global market. Future series will be supplied worldwide, leveraging China's smart manufacturing capabilities to serve the global hybrid market.

Looking ahead, Schaeffler revealed that the next generation of its hybrid transmission is already in development, focusing on continuous efficiency gains, structural optimization, and cost control. The new design will feature a more compact, efficient, and lightweight architecture compatible with HEV, PHEV, and REEV powertrain platforms, aiming to serve the rapidly evolving hybrid market.
