Sunwoda's Wang Mingwang: Three Trends Shaping the Future of the Advanced Battery Industry

Edited by Sissi From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich-On October 16, the 2026 Advanced Battery Industry Cluster Forum convened in Shenzhen. Wang Mingwang, chairman of the Advanced Battery Material Industry Cluster and founder of Sunwoda, addressed the opening ceremony, joining industry experts and peers to map out innovation pathways for the sector.

The global energy revolution is gathering pace, Wang said. Three trends — low-carbon production, smart management, and electrified consumption — are unlocking vast, reliable growth prospects for advanced batteries.

China's upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan for energy development brings top-level design to diverse energy-storage applications, cementing the strategic role of advanced batteries, he noted. Yet the industry faces headwinds: reliance on imported resources, margin pressures, international standard barriers, and overseas compliance hurdles. The sector must abandon extensive scale expansion and pivot toward high-quality, sustainable growth.

Recent industry data bears out that assessment.

Sunwoda installed 3.24 GWh of power batteries in September, capturing 3.74% of the market and ranking sixth domestically, according to the China Automotive Power Battery Innovation Alliance. LFP batteries accounted for 2.83 GWh of that total, good for a 3.80% share. Cumulative installations from January through September reached 17.77 GWh, securing a 3.09% share and keeping Sunwoda firmly in the industry's top tier.

Sunwoda's first-half report paints a stronger picture. EV battery shipments jumped 76.37% year on year to 28.36 GWh, driving an 85.87% revenue surge to 14.13 billion yuan. Its HEV battery shipments have led the domestic market for five straight years, with global installation volumes topping the charts in both the first and second quarters.

Momentum is building. Li Auto recently announced a 2.65 billion yuan strategic investment in Sunwoda Power, while Xiaomi EV tapped Sunwoda as a strategic battery partner. As the 15th Five-Year Plan's framework takes effect, Sunwoda Power is poised to capture even greater opportunity in both the hybrid and energy-storage segments.
