Musk has already signaled the end of the road for these models. On Jan. 28, 2026, during the 2025 earnings call, he announced a pivotal shift: the company will cease production of new Model S and Model X vehicles next quarter.
"This is part of our full transition to an autonomous future," Musk said. He added that the Model S and Model X lines at the Fremont, California, plant will be retrofitted to build Optimus humanoid robots, with a target of producing 1 million units annually.
Musk also issued a warning about competition in the humanoid robot space, specifically highlighting the challenge from China. "As far as we know, we have yet to encounter any capable competitors outside of China," he said. "But China will undoubtedly be a formidable rival. I've always felt that people in the industry outside China tend to underestimate it."
