The Dutch automotive sector is relatively small, but multifaceted. With a range of different manufacturers and suppliers at different points in the chain, it employs just under 40,000 people, more than 2,500 of which are in R&D and engineering. These include research institutes and service providers in the fields of engineering and testing.
With its densely woven physical infrastructure, the Netherlands is ideal for transport and transhipment. However, it is also a densely populated country with a population that is always on the move, two factors that can cause problems in terms of accessibility, safety and the environment. Solving these problems will require technological innovation in traffic and transport, not only to optimise existing transport systems, but also to develop new, advanced ones. Both new and established companies in the automotive sector are welcoming the opportunity to explore such innovations.
The total volume of automobiles on the road in Netherlands was 8,385,000 in 2005, including 7,229,000 passenger cars and 1,095,000 commercial cars.
