Cover the Logo, and Only Three Cars Remain?
This year’s Beijing International Auto Show arrived on a record-breaking scale, featuring over 1,000 exhibitors from 21 countries and regions, 1,451 vehicles on display, and 222 new model launches. But inside the halls, the consensus was clear: while the sheer number of exhibits was high, so was the similarity. Closed front ends, sloping rooflines, full-width taillights, massive central screens—mix and match these elements, and it seems you can "design" a new car.

Today, design homogeneity has become an open "ailment" in the industry. The root cause, however, isn't complicated.
First, electrification has created a highly unified technical path. Flat underfloor batteries and front-and-rear distributed motors have become the standard architecture. Furthermore, to extend range, the drag coefficient has become a core metric for styling, with the industry generally viewing 0.23Cd as the optimal balance point for family EVs.
Second, supply chain standardization has intensified this trend. Currently, nearly 70% of components in new vehicle development come from generic modular platforms. In the first half of 2026, the domestic auto industry’s average profit margin slipped below 2.8%; under such cost pressure, automakers struggle to allocate massive funds to original styling development.

For instance, the XPENG GX and Lynk & Co 900 were jokingly dubbed by netizens as the "Greater Bay Area Range Rover" and "Hangzhou Bay Range Rover," while the ZEEKR 9X and Voyah Taishan were labeled "Domestic Cullinans."
Zhang Jianyong, chairman of BAIC Group, once mocked himself: "Now, whenever I write the word 'surpass,' I often make a typo and write 'plagiarize' instead." This lighthearted quip masks an awkward industry consensus—faced with the trade-off between sales pressure and the cost of trial and error, choosing a "safe path" already validated by the market is often more practical than insisting on original styling.
Tang Fengliang, vice president of public relations and communications at Porsche China, responded at an industry forum in remarks that went viral: "Over the past few years, Porsche’s design has indeed inspired a highly unified aesthetic in the Chinese auto industry. Porsche feels honored by this, but also a bit helpless. It is easy for a design language to be paid tribute to or imitated, but the soul behind the design cannot be easily substituted."
Why does "paying tribute" persist despite repeated bans? Multiple industry insiders revealed an answer that has become almost a consensus internally: Originality carries the risk of failure, while "borrowing" a proven mature design appears commercially "safer."
Meanwhile, legal protection for domestic automotive design patents remains relatively limited. The cycle for rights protection is long, and the cost of infringement is low—Jaguar Land Rover’s lawsuit against Jiangling’s Landwind spanned three years, yet the final compensation after winning was only 1.5 million yuan. Such low costs for infringement further weaken the motivation for some companies to invest in original design.
But overseas markets are reshaping this cost-benefit formula. Mature markets like the European Union have extremely stringent intellectual property reviews, with clear standards for identifying design infringement and severe penalties. For Chinese brands to truly gain a foothold in Europe, design originality is no longer a "bonus"—it is a mandatory entry barrier. This is prompting more and more automakers with global ambitions to view original design as a strategic necessity, not an option.

At a roundtable discussion during the 2026 China Auto Forum, Zhou Xiaoying, CEO of Gasgoo, pointed directly to the industry's dilemma: "Everyone complained at this year's auto show that there were only three cars. We highly value design uniqueness." Design "Showboating" Shouldn't Crash Into Safety Baselines
If homogeneity is an aesthetic trap, the lessons of the "little blue light" and hidden door handles represent design spinning out of control before the safety red line.

Over the past two days, "smart-driving little blue light to be banned" topped the Weibo hot search list. The so-called "little blue light" refers to a blue external indicator installed on the roof, exterior mirrors, or rear of a vehicle, which illuminates when high-level driver assistance functions are active. In just four years, this feature has gone from an exclusive tag for a few brands to mass adoption by over a dozen brands across multiple price ranges.
The ban is based on the current mandatory national standard GB 4785, "Installation of lighting and light-signalling devices for motor vehicles and their trailers." The standard explicitly lists 26 permitted types of exterior lamps, limiting light colors to white, yellow, red, and amber—blue light sources are not included, nor is there a category for "intelligent driving assistance prompt lights." Since July 27, 2026, the installation of "little blue lights" on newly declared models has been suspended and prohibited.
But the problem with the "little blue light" goes beyond non-compliance. Zhang Hong, a committee member of the China Automobile Dealers Association, pointed out that the "little blue light" involves light abuse, posing safety risks. Hidden door handles were once considered a status symbol for new energy vehicles. Tesla brought them to the mainstream, and nearly all new EV brands followed. But hidden dangers emerged—if a car crashes or catches fire, damaged circuits can cause the handles to fail to pop out, trapping occupants inside.

On January 28, 2026, the mandatory national standard "Safety Technical Requirements for Motor Vehicle Door Handles" (GB 48001—2026), formulated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, was officially released. The new standard explicitly requires that every door must be equipped with mechanically operable exterior and interior handles. To break out of this dilemma, the core is answering one question: What gives Chinese automotive design the right to be remembered by the world?
In recent years, the industry has explored how to integrate Chinese culture into car design, but most attempts have remained at the "label-pasting" stage—carving Chinese patterns on grilles or embroidering Chinese characters on seats, assuming this constitutes "Chinese design."
While this approach may seem to offer a sense of cultural belonging on the surface, once stripped of marketing packaging, users find it hard to recognize a vehicle as a "Chinese car" based on the design itself among a sea of models.

In Li Yanlong's view, true design language is not pasted on, but grown from within; it is not a simple appropriation of a cultural symbol.
But a deeper question remains: Why do so many designers choose to "paste labels" rather than "grow from within"? Perhaps the answer lies not in the designers' sketches, but in corporate boardrooms.
When a car's styling proposal requires layers of approval, and every round of modification must align with sales data, designers naturally tend to choose what has already been market-validated. It’s not that they don't want to innovate, but that in the current decision-making chain, innovation carries too high a risk and too slow a return.
Changing this situation requires elevating design from a "styling department" to a "strategic department," giving design teams greater decision-making power and room for trial and error. It also requires the industry to form more effective consensus and mechanisms regarding IP protection, design value assessment, and originality incentives.
An important signal from the 2026 China Auto Forum was the announcement by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) that the Automotive Design Branch has officially entered the preparation stage. This means design is rising from a corporate activity to an industry issue. The branch plans to establish regular exchange mechanisms and conduct automotive design research. With a consensus platform at the industry level, companies have background support for strategic investment in design.
The domestic market still leaves some room for "borrowing," but today, going global is an inevitable trend for every automaker, pushing Chinese brand design directly onto an exam where originality is mandatory.
The strictness of intellectual property protection in the European market is well known. A model with a controversial appearance might slip by at home, but in Europe, it faces risks of sales bans, huge compensation, and even brand reputation collapse. This external pressure is forcing automakers to re-examine the strategic value of design.
At the 2026 China Auto Forum, Li Yanlong proposed a pragmatic design strategy for going global: Chinese cars going abroad shouldn't deliberately use "Chinese vs. Western" labels to differentiate, but should "find the commonalities in design—that is, seek the greatest common divisor of aesthetics." Roberto Fedeli offered more specific advice from an international perspective: Platforms can be exported, but design needs to be customized for different markets, not just in appearance, but also in the localized tuning of driving feel like handling and steering.

As market growth slows and competition shifts from "quantity" to "quality," design is no longer an optional "bonus"—it is a "must-answer" question determining whether a brand can survive.
