Toyota Motor Corp., the world's largest maker of gasoline-electric vehicles, boosted production of the Prius hybrid car in Japan this month as orders have risen 75 percent since the model went on sale in May.

Toyota will build 50,000 Priuses a month at its Tsutsumi factory and Toyota Auto Body Co.'s Fujimatsu plant, Hideaki Homma, a spokesman, said today by phone. He declined to say how many units it built before raising production.

The company has won more than 140,000 orders of the Prius in Japan, as of June 5, he said. The model went on sale May 18 after receiving 80,000 orders.

The Toyota City, Japan-based company transferred about 1,000 workers to its Tsutsumi factory in Aichi prefecture from other factories, Homma said.
