Shanghai August 30 (Gasgoo.com) Following GM's further cooperation with SAIC on new energy technology, Toyota Motor Corporation now expects to cooperate with its Chinese partners to develop new technology as well, Ya Kato, general manager of Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. said in an interview with Beijing News Last week.
Toyota has since 2002 started auto production in China, with hopes to import as many as its global strategy models into China as soon as possible. However, the table has turned-- automobile industry in China is advancing rapidly with special characteristics and particular needs, given which Toyota will discuss with its Chinese partners what technology the Chinese people will like, Ya Kato said.
Ya Kato mentioned that the Japanese automaker will develop with its partners the most suitable engines for the Chinese market, and transfer some sources and better products to the country.
Additionally, reports late last year said Toyota was planning a $330 million to $440 million R&D facility in China, but no further progress has since been announced.
Up until recently, China's media said Toyota's R&D center is currently awaiting approval from the Chinese government and will likely be located on the outskirts of Shanghai.
A Toyota executive has also confirmed the Japanese automaker will build its first wholly owned R&D center to bolster vehicle quality in China, according to People's Daily.
