Gasgoo.com (Shanghai October 9) - Following waves of protests across the country regarding the disputed Diaoyu Islands, a report appeared on the Legal Evening News that Toyota would compensate owners of vehicles that had been smashed or otherwise severely damaged by protesters. According to a Caijing story, FAW Toyota confirmed the news today, but added that, due to the recent holiday, the information has yet to reach some of its dealerships.

Incidents of Japanese cars being vandalized by demonstrators protesting Japanese nationalization of the Diaoyu Islands have been widespread across several Chinese cities. Last week, Guangqi Toyota dealerships in Chongqing and other cities began receiving notices that the joint venture would cover all protest related damages sustained by vehicle owners not already covered by their insurance policies.

FAW Toyota quickly followed suit, announcing its own compensation plan. According to reports circulating online, as long as insurance covered 70 percent of the damages incurred, the joint venture would pay the remaining costs on vehicles damaged during the protest. According to the reports, the offer will last until the end of the month. However, in an official statement, a representative from FAW Toyota stated that the JV would pay for all damages incurred. "Our principle is that the customer should not be liable [for any of the damages], regardless of whether or not their vehicle already has insurance." The representative added that the JV will offer a subsidy of 20,000 yuan ($3,167) for owners wanting to buy a new vehicle.
