From 2008, the Portuguese Government will impose a new tax which will prevent vehicles from being abandoned or sold to scrap merchants. The purpose of the measure is to prevent vehicles from being dumped or sold to scrap merchants and encouraging their destruction and recycling at authorised centres.
170,000 cars are taken off the road each year. 150 000 of which the authorities lose track of. In 2006, only around 20,000 cars were destroyed at authorised centres.
