Volkswagen opened its first representative office in Beijing in 1985. Today, the Volkswagen China provides the following functions: Marketing, Human Resources, Public Relations and Government Liaison, Quality Assurance, Research and Development and Local Content. The successful development of suppliers is one of the reasons for the success of its joint ventures. Volkswagen initiated the establishment of 160 joint ventures between foreign and Chinese suppliers, approximately 100 license and know how agreements and 250 tools and equipment agreements.
The Volkswagen Group is currently involved in two production joint ventures: Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW Volkswagen. In addition, the Volkswagen Group is a majority shareholder in a gearbox joint venture in Shanghai.
Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd. (SVW) is a joint venture between Volkswagen AG and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (Group) located in Anting International Auto City on the northwest outskirts of Shanghai. It occupies a total area of 3,330,000 m2, with a floor space of 900,000 m2. Currently having a product lineup made up of six series out of five passenger car platforms of Santana B2, Santana3000, Passat, Polo, Gol and Touran, SVW is one of the largest car-making bases in China with an annual production capacity of over 450,000 units.

FAW-VW Automobile Co., Ltd. is a major passenger sedan joint-venture of FAW Group Corporation and Volkswagen AG, Audi AG and Volkswagen Automobile (China) Investment Co., Ltd. It is China's first modern passenger sedan industrial base of considerable economic scale.
FAW-VW Automobile Co., Ltd. was formally established on February 6, 1991, and officially received by the State in August 1997. The company's Plant II for passenger cars officially began production on December 7, 2004. Through its continuous expansion, FAW-VW has become a company with a daily production capacity of over 1000 motor vehicles, with additional capacity for export of assembled vehicles; powertrain and component parts. It adopts advanced technologies and equipment to manufacture some of the world's most famous brands – Jetta; Bora; Golf; Caddy; Sagitar and Audi. The establishment of the company heralds the entry of China's automotive industry into a new era of large-scale production.

Volkswagen (Shanghai) Gearbox Factory, a jointly invested company among Volkswagen AG, China First Automobile Works Group Corporation and the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, held a grand opening and handover ceremony on January 28, 2003.
This marked the start of local production of manual gearboxes made to international standards, and ends Shanghai Volkswagen and the China FAW Group Corporations' history of importing this product. The joint venture will fully exert comprehensive advantages in quality, price, technique and service brought by a co-operative platform-building strategy.
Volkswagen Beijing Center (VBC) is on the 4th Ring Road, Beijing, for the first time Volkswagen Group China and a great car dealership, the Automobile Repair Company Beijing (ARCB), are approaching customers together.
At the VBC we deliver what we call the "Factory Service". That is service as if bringing the car directly to the place where it was built. That is service from and by the manufacturer. Specialists of VWAG and of Volkswagen Group China are within the VBC to solve every problem. Via remote diagnosis a car can even be connected to the Technical Service Center in Wolfsburg, Germany, where the immense known-how of the manufacturer is located.
The dealership has naturally been equipped with the newest technology and has been constructed from the most modern architectural point of view. The paint shop, workshop electronics and area of diagnosis are using the most modern technology that is currently available in the respective areas.
