On Oct. 16, the first Volkswagen ID. ERA 5X rolled off the SAIC Volkswagen assembly line, marking the start of mass production for CMP — the automaker’s first EV platform developed entirely in China. As the architecture’s inaugural model, the pure-electric SUV’s arrival signals a leap from concept to reality. FAW-Volkswagen will follow with the ID. AURA L5 later this year, kicking off scaled deployment of the CMP platform.
Built for Chinese buyers in the mainstream segment, CMP offers high flexibility, supporting both battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. All CMP models run Volkswagen’s CEA electrical architecture, deeply integrating hardware and software. They feature AI-powered smart cabins and enhanced Level 2 driver-assistance, with full over-the-air (OTA) updates every 100 days that install in under 30 minutes. The ID. ERA 5X, specifically, packs a 4-nanometer cockpit chip and LiDAR. Using the Coreix Hyper Sense 8 end-to-end large model, it delivers all-scenario, enhanced Level 2 driving assistance.

Space and efficiency see notable gains over the older MEB platform. The ID. ERA 5X and ID. AURA L5 both push cabin space utilization above 85%. A new direct heat-pump thermal management system coordinates climate, battery, and motor cooling, cutting CLTC-cycle energy use by roughly 5% at 0°C. The chassis pairs MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspensions with a near 50:50 weight distribution, balancing agile handling with ride comfort.
Safety is held to Volkswagen’s global engineering standards. CMP targets a 15-year, 300,000-km lifespan, requiring back-to-back winter and summer field tests alongside 24-hour continuous bench testing. The goal: five-star C-NCAP and “Excellent” C-IASI ratings. Hardware includes millisecond high-voltage fuses, while an emergency-assist system — standard across the board — can pull the car over and call for help if the driver becomes incapacitated.
Dr. Robert Cisek, CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Car Brand in China, called CMP’s mass production another milestone in the automaker’s local EV push. Over the next 18 months, Volkswagen plans to roll out six CMP-based models, deepening its reach into the mainstream market.
