Gasgoo.com (Shanghai July 10) - Production of new pure electric Volkswagens will begin next year, Caijing reported today, citing a statement made by VW China Executive Vice President Zhang Suixin. According to Dr. Zhang, Chinese production of EVs will take place simultaneously.
"Between 2013 and 2014, VW will begin manufacturing electric vehicles in China," Dr. Zhang (pictured) said. "VW China is fully committed to supplying energy efficient and environmentally friendly technology for Chinese consumers," he added. An electric powered version of the Golf is tipped to be among the upcoming models available in the country.
VW previously announced much more lofty targets for its electric and new energy vehicles earlier this year. According to its development strategy, the manufacturer expects that over two-thirds of all its funding in 2016 will go towards manufacturing more energy efficient automobiles and power systems.
Earlier this week, VW China, in association with the State Council Development Research Center's Research Department of Industrial Economy and the Society of Automotive Engineers, officially released a report and blue book on the state of the Chinese automobile industry in 2012, which touched on the issue.
