Gasgoo Munich-Gasgoo News reported on March 17 that ZF LIFETEC officially broke ground on a capacity expansion project at its Xi'an inflator base in the city's Economic and Technological Development Zone. The move marks a strategic breakthrough for the company as it doubles down on the Chinese market and bolsters its Asia-Pacific presence.

The expansion represents a total investment of 150 million euros and includes the construction of roughly 3,636 square meters of industrial space — a core component of ZF LIFETEC's global strategy. Plans call for the facility to focus on SHI2/SHI3 hybrid inflator production lines and supporting equipment by 2026. Once fully operational, the site is expected to add 4.1 million units of annual capacity for SHI2/SHI3 hybrid inflators and 1.8 million for hood lifters. That will push the Xi'an base's total annual inflator output past 21 million units, marking a substantial leap in both capacity and efficiency.
On the technology front, the project will establish a comprehensive R&D laboratory that leverages ZF LIFETEC's six decades of expertise in passive safety. Covering the full chain from material inspection and structural strength testing to product prototyping, the lab will focus on innovating next-generation hybrid inflators to drive the evolution of automotive passive safety technology.
Established in 2010, the Xi'an base is the ZF Group's sole production site for these products in the Asia-Pacific region, boasting a strong track record in passive safety over the past decade. Following the expansion, the facility will work in tandem with nine production bases and five R&D centers across the region to achieve multi-dimensional breakthroughs in technology and manufacturing processes — ensuring safer, more reliable passive safety solutions for drivers and passengers worldwide.
"China is a core pillar of ZF LIFETEC's global strategy, and the Xi'an base has developed steadily as a key production hub in the Asia-Pacific region," said Manfred Hüß, the company's global head of inflator production lines. "Launching this expansion underscores our firm commitment to doubling down on China and deepening our roots in the region. Moving forward, ZF LIFETEC will leverage its world-class technological resources to elevate production and R&D at Xi'an, aiming to build one of the most advanced inflator production bases globally and deliver superior products and services to customers worldwide."
