Hybrid technology becoming more important for Lexus, Chinese dealership network to grow

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai May 7) - Hybrid models will play an increasingly important part in Japanese luxury brand Lexus' future, Lexus China Vice President Lang Lixin stated. The comments, which appeared in a Securities Daily report appearing today, were made by Mr. Lang at the recently concluded Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition.

"According to our 2012 performance, hybrid models already account for 23 percent of Lexus' [total] sales volume," Mr. Lang pointed out, adding that hybrid sales made up over 80 percent of the brand's Chinese sales. "We hope to increase the proportion of sales [coming from] hybrids to 25 percent this year and up to 50 percent by 2015," Mr. Lang stated.

While its competitors have been announcing larger and larger localization plans, Lexus has been relatively silent on the issue. "Currently, we are paying more attention to the product quality of our vehicles," Mr. Lang said. He explained that as a manufacturer, Lexus places a great deal of importance on product quality and customer service, and that it focuses on improving these two aspects as it aims to increase its sales volume.

At the same time, Mr. Lang stated his confidence in the luxury vehicle market in China, which he points out is one of the most rapidly growing luxury car markets in the world. "I believe that the luxury car market in China will still maintain relatively high growth, [even] if it won't be as high as the growth seen in the past two years," he said, citing a predicted growth rate of 15 percent for this year.

To that end, Lexus will add 17 new 4S dealerships to its Chinese sales network by the end of this year, bringing the total number of outlets to 120. Smaller 'compact' 4S dealerships, which cost less than their full-sized counterparts, will play an important role in helping Lexus fulfill this goal. Mr. Lang clarifies that there will be no difference in customer service between normal and 'compact' 4S dealerships. The manufacturer will also expand its sales network to cover more third- and fourth-tier cities in the future.
