In China's new and developing auto market, exceeding sales of 500,000 units is a rare treat. However, Elantra from Beijing Hyundai, Accord from Honda Motors, Jetta from FAW-VW and Excelle from GM Buick have all succeeded in breaking the 500,000 mark.

Elantra was first produced by Hyundai Motors in South Korea in October 1990, it has been modified six times and has achieved sales of more than 3.1 million units overseas. Beijing Hyundai introduced Elantra in China on December 23rd, 2003. In 2004, Elantra's sales broke the 100,000 units' marks, with market share as high as 19% in the C-segment. In 2005, Elantra sales topped 176,599 units, emerging as the champion in its segment.
