Car and City: Shanghai's insurance registrations of new passenger vehicles in Nov. 2021
Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In November 2021, the insurance registrations of locally-made passenger vehicles in Shanghai, one of the most developed cities in China, reached 58,957 units, dropping 12.9% from the previous year, while jumping 25.6% from the previous month, according to the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC).
Among the homegrown PVs registered in Shanghai last month, 25,565 units were new energy vehicles (NEVs), representing a 6.8% growth compared to the year-ago period. The Nov. NEV registrations were composed of 17,818 BEVs and 7,747 PHEVs (including 974 REEVs).
In terms of ownerships, there were 49,029 and 8,036 locally-made PVs registered by private users and business users respectively in Nov. Besides, a total of 1,872 homebred PVs were registered for car rental service.
By Nov. PV registrations, the top three auto brands in Shanghai were Volkswagen, BYD, and Tesla. Compared to Oct., Buick dropped two spots to the fourth, outsold by Tesla by only 45 units.
Among the top 10 auto brands, Tesla was still the unique one with only BEVs registered. The other nine all had ICEVs and NEVs available for registration. Notably, NEVs accounted for 98.4% of BYD's Nov. Shanghai registrations.
Among the top 10 PV models by Nov. registrations in Shanghai, only two were oil-fueled products, namely, the Buick GL8 and the Lavida, ranking fourth and fifth respectively. Tesla's two models seized the first two spots. Four BYD-branded models cracked the top 10 rankings. Besides, the Li ONE was the only one owned by a Chinese NEV startup.
By Nov. new energy passenger vehicle (NEPV) registrations, the most popular auto brand in Shanghai was still BYD, which had 3,296 PHEVs and 2,858 BEVs registered respectively. Tesla was the runner-up, seeing its Nov. registrations in Shanghai zoom up 96.8% MoM. Three Chinese startups—XPeng, NIO, and Li Auto—ranked fifth to seventh.
Last month, the hottest-selling NEPV model in Shanghai was still the Model Y, outnumbering the runner-up Model 3 by 1,926 units. The BYD Song PLUS DM-i was the one of the three NEPV models logging Nov. registrations of over 1,000 units. The Li ONE and the ES6 were the only two Chinese startup-owned ones on the top 10 NEPV models list.
