China’s new energy vehicle population reaches 18.21 million units by Sept. 2023

Shangahi (Gasgoo)- In a recent report by China's Ministry of Public Security, as of the end of September 2023, the total number of motor vehicles registered in China has reached a staggering 430 million units, with 330 million being automobiles.

During the first three quarters of 2023, there were 18.17 million cars newly registered in China, reflecting a 4.4% year-on-year increase. This figure is broken down into 5.88 million units in the first quarter, 5.87 million in the second quarter, and 6.42 million units in the third quarter.

By the end of September this year, China's new energy vehicle population had grown to 18.21 million units, constituting 5.5% of the total automobile volume. Among these, pure electric vehicles accounted for a substantial 14.01 million units, making up 76.9% of the total new energy vehicle count.

In the first three quarters of 2023, the country added 5.198 million new energy vehicles to its roads, reflecting a 40% year-on-year increase. These new energy vehicles accounted for 28.6% of all newly registered cars in the same period, with 1.44 million units in the first quarter, 1.709 million units in the second quarter, and 2.049 million units in the third quarter.

As of the end of September, there were 90 Chinese cities with over one million registered automobile units, marking an increase of eight cities compared to the year-ago period. Among these, 43 cities had more than 2 million cars, and 25 cities boasted a remarkable fleet of over 3 million cars. The three cities— Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing— had over 6 million cars each, Shanghai and Suzhou hold over 5 million cars each, while Zhengzhou, Xi'an, Wuhan, Tianjin, Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou had deployed more than 4 million cars each.

By the end of September, the total number of licensed motor vehicle drivers in China reached around 520 million individuals, of which 480 million were licensed to driving cars, constituting 92.8% of the total licensed drivers.
