The cross-licensing between the two companies covers PATEO and Huawei Technologies’ global patents in the automotive field, especially infotainment systems. The collaboration will further consolidate the duo’s dominant position in intellectual property rights in the intelligent connected vehicles aspect.
At the same time, PATEO became the first Tier1 V2X solution supplier in China to obtain Huawei’s Standard Essential Patent (SEP) and a series of related technologies license. A SEP refers to an essential patent that must be used to implement a technical standard. The SEP licenses included in Huawei Technologies and PATEO’s agreement cover intelligent connected vehicles equipped with wireless connections.
With the agreement, PATEO's products will be licensed to use Huawei’s designated technologies globally. Moreover, automakers who adopts PATEO’s products will not need to pay repeated patent licensing fees.
The head of Huawei's Intellectual Property Rights Department, Fan Zhiyong, said that Huawei reached cooperation in the second half of this year with Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, and Porsche to authorize the carmakers to use Huawei’s automotive technology. According to Mr. Fan, the cooperation means that about 15 million units of the 70 million cars produced globally each year carry Huawei’s technology.
