The public road test will help the duo collect road data and validate the autonomous driving performance of the vehicles. The two companies will also start planning for a possible upcoming production. The IVECO S-WAY trucks equipped with the PlusDrive intelligent driving system will offer improved safety, operational efficiency, and driving experience, as well as a more sustainable vehicle option for fleet operators.
Shawn Kerrigan, COO and Co-founder of Plus, said, "as we prepare for commercial deployment of our self-driving products in Europe, real-world experience is an invaluable component of testing and validating our technology. With Germany alone facing a shortage of 60,000 truck drivers, our highly automated driving solution, PlusDrive, will help improve local road safety, transportation sustainability, and driver recruitment and retention."
According to Plus, starting from Germany, the open road tests will also travel to Austria, Italy, and Switzerland in the coming months. The unique road and driving conditions in each country will provide a variety of terrain, road gradients, weather conditions, and driving scenarios for their highly automated trucks. This will help Plus to continually improve its autonomous driving technology.
