Shanghai, January 23 (Gasgoo.com) Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC) will launch its 2009 Roewe 750 model next month to boost its growth in the sedan market, said xinhuanet.com today. The all-new car will have the 1.8T and 2.5V6 editions.
As the first model of SAIC's Roewe brand derived from British Rover that SAIC bought the rights to in 2005, the Roewe 750 features a unique fusion of Chinese and European elements and has become more competitive in China's medium- and high-end sedan market. The 2008 Roewe 720 model has the 1.8T and 2.5V6 editions priced between 172,800 yuan ($25,300) and 276,800 yuan.
The 2009 Roewe 720 model to be released soon will also have the 1.8T and 2.5V6 versions, but its price may be a little higher than the 2008 model as the new car will have upgraded configurations. The new Roewe 720 is likely to go on sale in February.
Earlier reports said that SAIC is working on a hybrid version of its Roewe 750 sedan, a car derived from the Rover 75. The Chinese auto giant plans to launch its first own-brand hybrid car on the market in late 2010. The new hybrid car named Roewe 750 1.8T can increase fuel efficiency by around 20%.
The Roewe 750 hybrid will be followed by an all-electric version. SAIC has formed a new energy car technology company in Shanghai to develop power and control system integration for hybrid and electric vehicles.
