Shanghai, January 22 (Gasgoo.com) Chinese automaker Zhejiang Jonway Automobile Co. Ltd. and U.S. electric car maker Zap have agreed to jointly produce electric SUVs, cars and other electric vehicles in China for domestic and global markets, media reported yesterday.

The partnership with Jonway is part of Zap's multi-phase business plan to target the booming electric vehicle market in China. Jonway is selected as a local partner as the company has produced one of the first vehicles in China to meet international quality standards.

Jonway has an annual production capacity of up to 50,000 vehicles at its facilities in Taizhou, eastern Zhejiang province and is able to expand with government backing if necessary. The company markets and sells vehicles domestically through a network of more than 600 dealerships.

ZAP and Jonway plan to sell a 5-door SUV powered by AC propulsion and lithium battery system technologies. Currently Jonway produces several thousand units per month of the 3- and 5-door SUV models and its product lineup is expanding with new sedan and other auto models.

In the partnership, Zap's electric drive systems will be integrated into the re-engineered SUV produced by Jonway, and ZAP will perform research and development of the core technology in Santa Rosa, Calif. and license the technology.

The two companies will market and sell electric vehicles in China, North America and Europe. ZAP said its China operations aim to capitalize on Chinese government subsidies for plug-in electric vehicles.
