Gasgoo.com (Shanghai August 6) - Test assembly of Volkswagen's next generation Santana and new Jetta has already begun at Shanghai VW's Jiangsu and FAW-VW's Sichuan factories, Beijing News reported today. The new models are both based on the new PQ25 platform.
Shanghai VW's new Santana and FAW-VW's new Jetta, respectively codenamed VW253 and VW253-2, are already in the works. Despite the fact that they are being designed separately, they will both share the PQ25 platform, which is currently used in the VW Polo and Skoda Fabia. Although VW's Chinese joint ventures are playing a key role in developing the new models, they will not be limited to this country. There are plans for both to be sold in India, Brazil, Russia and Southeast Asia.
Both models will be powered by new engines. The new Santana may use one from VW's new EA211 series. The midsize will be slightly smaller than its predecessor, but will sport a more comfortable interior. In order to minimize internal competition, production of the current Polo sedan will cease, and the new Polo sedan will not be brought over to China.
The original Santana was the first model Shanghai VW imported from Brazil. Since its Chinese introduction, the Santana, which is based on the second-generation Passat, gradually fell down Shanghai VW's model ranks, eventually becoming the joint venture's lowest entry level model. It is one of the most iconic cars on Chinese streets.
