As the three most influential Japanese auto manufacturers - Honda, Nissan and Toyota ? and nearly one hundred of auto parts manufacturers have settled down at Guangzhou successively, Guangzhou's automotive industry has become a leading force to quicken Guangzhou's economic growth, and the leader of Guangzhou's three pillar industries. According to statistics, Guangzhou's automotive industry reached an output value of RMB 46.2 billion in 2003, with an increase of nearly 68.3%, among which cars were 183.300, accounting for 8.9% of the national car output, just following Shanghai and Jilin in output of vehicles. Guangzhou has become one of the top three car manufacturing bases in China. Whole car production has promoted the extension of the auto industrial chain and development of the related auto services. Guangzhou's auto parts manufacture industry increased by 46.9% last year.

At present, Guangzhou has more than ten companies to produce cars, buses and light vehicles, and more than 200 auto parts manufacturers. The products include key parts, brake system, driving axles, shock absorbers, friction materials, standard parts, hydraulic systems, power transmission systems, integral instruments, lights, and uniform universal joints, etc. A relatively complete auto industrial chain, including high-, medium- and low-grade cars, big- and medium-sized buses, light lorries, various modified vehicles and related auto parts, has basically taken shape.

Making full use of cost advantages, Guangzhou auto parts manufacturers take part in international competition while they gradually meet the domestic demands for auto parts. Auto micromotors, springs, air conditioners, instruments and wire bunches have been exported to other counties through the world.

In 2004, Guangzhou's automotive industry keeps a faster development. From January to June this year, Guangzhou had produced 119,525 vehicles, an increase of above 50% over the previous same period of time, with an output value of above RMB27.5 billion, an increase of nearly 40% over the previous same period of time. In 2004, the annual production capacity of Guangzhou Honda will reach 290,000, that of the Guangzhou Nissan will reach 150,000. It is estimated that Guangzhou's car output will reach 400,000 this year.

When Guangzhou Toyota is put into production in 2006, Guangzhou's annual car output will exceed 500,000. The gross output value of the automotive industry will exceed RMB100 billion. It will promote the upstream industry to produce an output value of RMB65 billion, out of which mechanic products' output value will be RMB26 billion; electronic and electric products'  will be RMB26 billion; iron and steel industry’s will be RMB8.5 billion; plastic industry's will be RMB2 billion; rubber industry’s will be RMB2 billion, glass industry's will be RMB800 million. And it will promote the downstream industry to produce an output value of RMB263 billion.

In 2010, annual car output is expected to reach 1.3 million, with a gross output value of more than RMB300 billion. And then, Guangzhou would become China's important automotive production base and an important base of partial auto parts supply in the world.
