1.8 Liter cars have been the most popular middle-sized family sedans over years. However, 1.6 Liter cars have gradually found their way to replace 1.8 Liter cars as the most popular family sedans.

In the past, 1.6 liter engines were usually installed on compact cars, like Sail, Kia Rio, Fiesta, Lancer. However, more and more 1.6 liter engines are used to power middle-sized vehicles.

Official statistics about the first six months car sales show that 1.6 liter engines are mounted in 78% of 720,000 Notchback Eexel vehicles;70% of 27,500 Dongfeng Peugeot vehicles are equipped with 1.6 liter engines; in Sagitar, 1.6 Liter engines cars are twice the combined number of 1.8 engine cars and 2.0 engine cars; 96% of the 55,000 hatchback Elantra and 35,000 Cerato are equipped with 1.6 liter engines. In addition, all hatchback Elantra Sports are equipped with 1.6 liter engines.

Analysts say there are two factors behind the popularity of 1.6 liter engines. First, consumers are becoming realistic in selecting middle-sized family cars, second, technological advancement has enabled 1.6 liter cars to compete with old 1.8 liter cars in driving power.

Currently 1.6 liter middle-sized vehicle has become a major battle field for carmakers. As the energy saving 1.6 liter cars gains popularity, the use of 1.6 liter engines in compact cars will decline. Experts believe it’s inevitable that 1.3 liter and 1.4 liter engines will replace 1.6 liter engines in future compact cars.
