XPENG launches AI-enabled AR-HUD co-developed with Huawei

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On June 5, XPENG and Huawei's Intelligent Automotive Solution unit jointly launched the "XHUD" , which the carmaker claims as the world's first AI-integrated AR-HUD (augmented-reality head-up display) solution for vehicles.

XPENG also revealed that that the forthcoming XPENG G7, XPENG's first fire new model for this year, will be the inaugural model to carry the new AR-HUD system.

As ADAS (advanced driver-assistance system) evolves, driver demand for safer, real-time information access continues to grow. Traditional center displays and instrument panels require drivers to look away from the road, posing safety risks. AR-HUD addresses this by projecting critical driving information directly into the driver's line of sight, emerging as one of the most sought-after features in next-generation vehicles.

However, existing AR-HUD solutions have struggled with visibility issues, dizziness, and obstructed views. These shortcomings largely stem from a lack of innovation and limited integration between hardware, software, and human-machine interaction. Many current HUDs merely display basic information, falling short of delivering real intelligence or value to the user.

XPENG and Huawei have joined forces to change that. In their first collaboration on HUD technology, the companies aim to deliver a best-in-class AR-HUD experience. Backed by Huawei's R&D investment of over 10 billion yuan, the hardware platform delivers industry-leading clarity, brightness, and color performance. Meanwhile, XPENG contributes its end-to-end AI-powered driving algorithms and advanced perception design to make the AR-HUD truly "intelligent," capable of understanding road conditions, predicting vehicle behavior, and tailoring display content in real time.

To address long-standing technical hurdles—such as ghosting, motion sickness, and poor AR alignment—XPENG and Huawei conducted deep joint development of core AR-HUD display technologies. The system boasts an ultra-wide 87-inch virtual display field, capturing cross-lane data with ease. Its 12,000-nit brightness and 1,800:1 contrast ratio ensure visibility in all lighting conditions. XPENG also co-developed a distortion correction algorithm with Huawei, reducing distortion to under 1%. With a 10-meter virtual image distance and just 100ms latency, the display remains smooth and comfortable even during extended use.

In terms of precision, the system integrates XPENG's 3D Occupancy (OCC) perception from its ADAS and a co-developed AR prediction engine. The result is a minimalistic, intuitive, and crystal-clear interface that aligns AR elements precisely with real-world road features—no visual clutter, no misalignment.

According to XPENG, the XHUD also addresses several key pain points in everyday driving scenarios:

Navigation: The system pioneers lane-level AR navigation, overlaying the route directly onto the windshield and aligning perfectly with the real road. It uses an AR light path to guide drivers through lane changes, turns, and complex intersections. Inaccurate turns are prevented by clearly marking incorrect directions with an "X."

Driver assistance: XPENG's AR-HUD visualizes AI-driven intentions, increasing user confidence in the smart driving system. It supports six major driving scenarios, providing clear cues for lane changes, traffic light behavior, overtaking paths, and even complete visual parking guidance from spot to spot—all with AR overlays.

Safety alerts: The system delivers advanced AR-based safety assistance. In low-visibility conditions such as rain or fog, it highlights the vehicle ahead and lane boundaries. On narrow roads, it preemptively shows a safe path for passing. It also issues proactive warnings on sharp turns, blind spots, pedestrian jump-outs, speeding, and sudden cut-ins from adjacent lanes.
