Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On September 24, BYD handed over 50 electric buses to Azerbaijan's BAKUBUS in a ceremony held at the Sumgait Industrial Park, according to a press release by BYD Commercial Vehicle.

The delivery marked the first batch of a 300-unit order signed following last year's supply of 160 buses. It also represented the debut output from a new bus plant jointly built by BYD, Azerbaijan's Sarda Group, and the national development fund, signaling a new phase in the company's partnership with the country.

Tian Chunlong, general manager of BYD's commercial vehicle business unit, said the successful launch of the plant and confirmation of the 300-bus order demonstrate the depth of cooperation between the company and Azerbaijan in sustainable transport. He added BYD aims to leverage its expertise in electrification and its vertically integrated supply chain to support the country's transition to new energy commercial vehicles and accelerate the upgrade of its public transport network.

The plant is scheduled to adopt a CKD (completely knocked-down) assembly model starting in 2027, a move expected to raise the level of local manufacturing and strengthen Azerbaijan's ability to build a more efficient, low-carbon public transport system. The 300 buses will be deployed in Baku, Karabakh, and Nakhchivan, with additional units to be assembled locally and delivered in stages.

Following the ceremony, a BYD delegation met with Azerbaijan's Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov to discuss opportunities for expanding cooperation, accelerating localization efforts, and developing additional joint projects.
