Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Driven by China's goals of hitting peak carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, SAIC Motor aims to sell over 2.7 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) per year by 2025, making NEVs account for over 32% of the group's total car sales, Wang Xiaoqiu, President of SAIC Motor, said on Sept. 16 at the 2021 WNEVC (World New Energy Vehicle Congress).

According to the speech Mr. Wang delivered, the Shanghai-based auto giant expects the annual sales of its own-brand vehicles to surpass 4.8 million units by 2025, more than 38% of which are NEVs.

Besides, SAIC Motor is ambitious to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2025, 5 years earlier than the timeline set by China's central government.

At the industrial conference, Wang Xiaoqiu introduced the achievements SAIC Motor made in low-carbon development. In the first half of this year, the group sold over 280,000 NEVs, representing a year-on-year surge of around 400%. During this period, NEVs contributed to 13% of the group's total auto sales, versus 5.7% for the year-ago period. Of the NEVs sold in the first six months, 24% were from SAIC Motor's self-owned brands.

In January, IM Motors, the premium smart all-electric vehicle brand co-built by SAIC Motor, Alibaba, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech, was born. At the Auto Shanghai 2021, the automaker kicked off the presale of the first IM-branded model, the IM L7, and expects to start delivery in the first half of 2022. The L7's top-spec version has a claimed NEDC-rated range of 1,000km.

To speed up the exploration of low-carbon travelling methods and recycling of resources, SAIC Motor has been operating shared mobility service since 2016, resulting in the reduction of 130,000-ton carbon emissions compared to the use of traditional oil-fueled vehicles based on same mileages.

What's more, SAIC Motor plans to start producing the next-generation platform-based power batteries at the end of 2021, which are available for fast charging and cyclic utilization.
