Tesla sells 54,391 China-made vehicles in October

Beijing (Gasgoo)- Tesla sold 54,391 China-made vehicles in October, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). That included 40,666 vehicles that were exported to other countries last month.

According to the association, the wholesale volume of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China amounted to 368,000 vehicles in October, up by 6.3% month on month and 148.1% year on year. For the first ten months of this year, China’s NEV wholesale amount surged 204.3% from a year ago to 2.381 million vehicles.

The NEV retail sales of the market soared 141.1% year on year to 321,000 vehicles last month, but fell 3.9% month over month. The year-to-date retail volume of NEVs nearly tripled (up by 191.9%) year on year to 2.139 million units.

BYD achieved outstanding sales results in both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The monthly wholesale volume of BYD exceeded 80,000 units to 80,373, outselling Tesla China (54,391 vehicles), SAIC GM Wuling (42,133 vehicles), SAIC Motor PV (24,085 vehicles) and GAC AION (12,064 vehicles), data from the association showed.

NEV startups, including XPeng, NETA, Li Auto, WM Motor and NIO, also saw good year-on-year and month-on-month sales change. The so-called second-tier startups, such as NETA, WM Motor and Leapmotor, managed to maintain continuous growth.

Among joint ventures, Volkswagen’s two joint ventures, SAIC Volkswagen and FAW Volkswagen achieved a combined retail sales volume of 16,318 NEVs, accounting for 72% of the total NEV sales of all automobile joint ventures in China. BMW’s NEV sales reached 4,283 vehicles in China last month. 

The country’s NEV export had explosive growth in October. Tesla exported 40,666 vehicles from China, followed by SAIC Motor PV (6,659 NEVs exported), BYD (1,026 NEVs exported), FAW Hongqi (424 NEVs exported).
