NIO, Shell to team up on construction, operation of battery swap stations

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- NIO announced on Nov. 25 it has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with Shell, a global energy and petrochemical group, to boost the cooperation in the electric vehicle (EV) and energy industries globally.

Per the agreement, both parties will jointly push the construction and operation of EV charging and battery swap facilities. NIO and Shell plan to install 100 battery swapping stations in China by 2025, and begin the building and trial operation of battery swapping stations in Europe from 2022. Besides, Shell's charging network in Europe will be open to NIO users.

Moreover, the duo will explore more cooperative opportunities in battery asset management, fleet management, membership system, home charging services, advanced charging and battery swapping technology development, and construction of charging facilities in China.

Istvan Kapitany, global executive vice president of Shell Mobility, commented “the partnership with NIO will allow us to offer Shell Recharge high-speed charging at NIO locations and make battery swap available at convenient Shell locations while also offering NIO customers our best home and business charging solutions.”

As of Nov. 22, 2021, NIO had deployed a total of 636 battery swap stations across China. The startup eyes the completion of 4,000 battery swap stations worldwide by 2025, over 1,000 will be deployed outside China.
