In April, the US electric vehicle star produced 10,757 vehicles in its Shanghai plant. However, Tesla did not ship any locally-made vehicles overseas in the month due to the pandemic. Under external circumstances such as the pandemic and auto parts supply crunch, China’s new energy passenger vehicle wholesale volume dropped 38.5% from March but went up 50.1% year on year to 280,000 vehicles in April. From January to April, there were a total of 1.469 million new energy passenger vehicles sold in wholesale nationwide, more than doubled from a year ago by 119%.

The slew of price lifts issued by new energy automakers in China has yet to dampen market demand. Orders for new energy vehicles remained abundant in April.

In the past month, new energy vehicles accounted for 48.8% of the monthly China-branded new car sales, and 3.7% of joint venture-branded vehicle sales. Among all luxury vehicles sold in April, 4.8% were new energy vehicles.

Among all new energy vehicles wholesaled in the month, 214,000 units were battery-electric vehicles, jumping 39.9% from a year ago. Meanwhile, 66,000 units were plug-in hybrid vehicles, soaring 96.8% compared to that of 2021.

BYD, which recently renounced the production of gasoline-fueled vehicles came on top regarding April's new energy vehicle wholesale volume, with an outstanding 105,475 vehicles sold. Aside from BYD, the rest three automakers who saw a monthly wholesale volume of over 10,000 units were all traditional Chinese auto players, namely SAIC GM Wuling (30,020 units), Chery Auto (15,568 units), and GAC AION (10,212 units).

In the fourth month of 2022, China’s export volume of new energy vehicles amounted to 7,600 units, nearly half of which were contributed by eGT New Energy Automotive, the electric vehicle joint venture of Renault-Nissan Alliance and Dongfeng Motor Group at 3,433 units. The respective export volume of SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle, Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën, BYD, and Aiways stood at 1,300 units, 805 units, 705 units, and 168 units.
