Shanghai (Gasgoo)- BYD today formally launched the cell-to-body (“CTB”) battery technology. Presale of the BYD Seal, the first production model to use BYD's CTB technology, kicked off at the same time.

The automaker claimed the presale prices of the BYD Seal range from 212,800-289,800 yuan ($31,620-43,060) after subsidies.

According to BYD, the CTB technology can combine a car's underbody cover and battery pack's top cover together to simplify the car body's structure and manufacturing process.

Besides, the CTB enables a Blade battery pack to be united with the car body more closely, so as to double the vehicle's torsional stiffness to 40,000 N·m/degree. Thanks to the technology, the battery pack can be involved in the vehicle's force transferring as a structural part, so that the car's side pillar impact will be reduced by 45%.

The CTB also allows a car to have a lower mass center and a 50:50 axle-load distribution.

Riding on BYD's e-platform 3.0, the BYD Seal is the second all-electric car in the BYD Ocean Series. According to the official images BYD released, the BYD Seal has a calm and soft silhouette. The long and narrow headlights are inspired by the eyes of a marine creature. The sealed-off grille and the front hood bulges accentuate a sporty essence for the vehicle.

With a sedan-coupe design, the BYD Seal features double creases on the side and pop-out door handles, which partly contribute to a super low drag coefficient of 0.219Cd.

The ducktail-styled tail wing further improves the sporty sense of the model. The taillight cluster contains a slender light strip running across the rear.

It comes with both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions. The four-wheel-drive version can achieve 0-100km/h acceleration in only 3.8 seconds.
