CATL to launch CTP 3.0 battery ‘Qilin’ soon
Shanghai (Gasgoo)- CATL will soon launch the all-new battery “Qilin” that uses its CTP (cell-to-pack) 3.0 technology, Wu Kai, chief scientist with CATL, said on June 16 at the 2022 World EV & ES Battery Conference.
According to Mr. Wu's speech, the CTP 3.0 battery can prevent thermal runaway by adding a liquid-cooled plate between two cells, so as to weaken the heat conduction between neighboring cells.
He also noted the new battery supports high-voltage fast-charging, particularly 4C charging, and will be rolled out into the market later next year.
The CTP 3.0 technology can help significantly improve the battery service life thanks to the buffering brought by the liquid-cooled plate, Mr. Wu added.

At the China EV100 Forum held in March this year, Wu Kai also gave some information about the Qilin battery. He revealed then that the battery would boast industrial-leading battery system weight, gravimetric energy density, and volumetric energy density. Under the same chemical mechanism and the same battery pack size, Qilin's capacity can be 13% higher than the 4680 battery.
In addition, the CTP 3.0 will be available in both LFP and NCM battery cell chemistries. Using the CTP technology, the LFP battery system will have a gravimetric energy density of 160Wh/kg and a volumetric energy density of 290Wh/l, while the figures for the NCM one will be at least 250Wh/kg and 450Wh/l.
