China sees annual power battery installed capacity zoom up 90.7% YoY in 2022

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In Dec. 2022, China's power battery output reached 52.5GWh, leaping 65.9% year on year, while sliding 15.8% month on month, according to the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance (CAPBIIA).

Of the power batteries produced last month, 18.5GWh and 33.9GWh were ternary-lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, up 61.5% and 69% from the year-ago period, respectively.

For the year of 2022, there were a total of 545.9GWh power batteries produced in China, representing a 148.5% year-on-year spike. The annual output of ternary-lithium batteries and LFP batteries reached 212.5GWh (+126.4% YoY) and 332.4GWh (+165.1% YoY), respectively.

The alliance's data show that China's power battery sales reached 52.2 GWh (+47.1% YoY) last month, 58.4% of which were contributed by LFP batteries.

The full-year power battery sales in China zoomed up 150.3% from a year earlier to 465.5 GWh in 2022.

In addition, the country's power battery installed capacity amounted to 36.1GWh in Dec. 2022, jumping 37.9% from the previous year, while also rising 5.5% from the previous month.

To be specific, the installed capacity of ternary-lithium batteries and LFP batteries reached 11.4GWh and 24.7GWh last month, growing 3.3% and 64%, respectively, compared to the year-ago period.

China's annual power battery installed capacity in 2022 surged 90.7% year over year to 294.6GWh. Notably, the yearly capacity of LFP batteries soared 130.2% over the previous year to 183.8GWh.

Moreover, there were 9.4GWh made-in-China power batteries exported to overseas markets in Dec. 2022, 65.5% of which were ternary-lithium batteries. The country's full-year power battery export volume came in at 68.1GWh in 2022.

Regarding the Dec. power battery installed capacity, CATL, FinDreams Battery (the EV battery unit of BYD), and CALB were still the top 3 among China's EV battery players, making up 80.5% of China's total monthly capacity. Compared to the previous month, Sunwoda moved up one spot to the fourth, immediately followed by Gotion High-Tech.

With regard to the annual power battery installed capacity, the top 10 battery makers made up 94.95% of the country's total volume. Of them, CATL, FinDreams Battery, CALB, and Gotion High-Tech still topped others by holding a combined market share of 82.7%.
