Tesla China’s Feb. 2023 export volume reaches 40,479 vehicles

Beijing (Gasgoo)- In February 2023, Tesla saw 40,479 Shanghai-made vehicles shipped to overseas markets, up 3.24% from January and 21.5% year on year, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The company's export volume accounted for 54.4% of its monthly China wholesale volume in February. In the first two months of 2023, the US electric vehicle maker saw 79,687 vehicles exported outside of China from the Shanghai Gigafactory.

According to rankings released by the CPCA, Tesla China was the sixth in line on the Top10 automakers list in terms of February 2023 wholesale volume of locally-made passenger vehicles, climbing up two spots from a month ago. Specifically, the wholesale volume of the Model Y and the Model 3 came in at 51,412 units and 22,990 units last month, ranking second and sixth among all China-made passenger vehicle models. Notably, among the Top 8 model list compiled by the CPCA, six were new energy passenger vehicle (NEPV) models. Aside from the two Tesla models, BYD’s Song (52,400 units), Yuan (33,612 units), Qin (30,540 units), and Dolphin (22,861 units) all made it on the list. 

In the second month of 2023, China’s homemade NEPV retail sales summed up to 439,000 units, zooming up 61% year on year and 32.8% month on month. 

In terms of the overall monthly retail volume of NEPVs in China, Tesla secured 7% of the Chinese market in February, down 1.1 percentage points from the previous month. In the past month, China’s locally-owned brands accounted for 64% of the entire NEPV retail volume, growing 5 percentage points from the previous year. 

The market share of Chinese new energy vehicle startups dropped 2 percentage points from a year earlier to 11% in February. Startups such as Li Auto and NIO maintained their robust performance in retail sales compared to the previous year and month. Among auto brands held by Chinese-foreign joint ventures, Volkswagen’s two Sino joint ventures sustained its leading position with 6,886 NEPVs wholesaled in the past month, which accounted for 37% of the mainstream pure-electric joint-venture vehicle market in China.

In the second month of 2023, a total of 79,000 NEPVs were exported by Chinese automakers, up 6.76% month-on-month. Among the NEPVs shipped overseas, 96% were battery-electric vehicles. To illustrate, the top 10 exporters of NEPVs in China during February were Tesla China (40,497 units), SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle (16,827 units), BYD (15,002 units), Geely Auto (892 units), Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen (796 units), Dongfeng eGT (757 units), smart Automobile (652 units), JAC Group (617 units), SAIC MAXUS (452 units), and Skyworth Auto (323 units).
