Achieving this feat in just approximately 30 months is particularly impressive, considering the factory opened its doors in 2019 and initially focused solely on producing the Model 3. The construction of the Model Y Phase 2 production area was still underway at that time. The localized production of the Model Y in China began in early 2021.
This achievement is even more remarkable considering the obstacles faced, including supply chain disruptions and factory closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Presently, the Shanghai Gigafactory serves as Tesla's primary vehicle export hub, catering to 10 countries across four continents, including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand.
Earlier this year, the factory started exporting the Model Y vehicles to countries such as Canada and Mexico. Despite Tesla establishing additional factories since the inception of the Shanghai Gigafactory, this Chinese facility continues to be a symbol of efficiency and productivity, currently boasting the highest production output for the company.
According to data compiled by the China Passenger Car Association, Tesla scored a 20.57% jump in June monthly wholesale volume, which came in at 93,680 vehicles. Notably, wholesale volume of the Model Y stood at 63,043 units, outshining other passenger vehicle models in China in June, and accounted for 67.3% of the carmaker's total monthly volume.
