Car and City: Tesla sees China-made vehicle registrations in H1 2023 surge 48.43% YoY

In the sixth month of 2023, a total of 73,209 China-made Tesla-branded vehicles were registered across the Chinese mainland, representing a 5.48% drop compared to the previous year, but reflecting a 68.01% jump from the previous month, according to the data compiled by Gasgoo Auto Research Institute ("GARI").

Regarding the monthly registrations of China-made new energy vehicles (NEVs) in June 2023, Tesla was credited the runner-up among all auto brands in China, following BYD.

For the first half of 2023, Tesla saw its registrations of made-in-China vehicles in the country total 294,214 units, indicating a 48.43% year-on-year surge.

Both the Shanghai-made Model 3 and Model Y recorded a year-on-year decline in their June 2023 registrations, but still scored a two-digit soar over a month earlier.

There were 22,572 China-made Model 3s registered on the Chinese mainland in June, down 11.53% year on year, but up 96.48% month on month. The volume for the first six months of this year amounted to 90,056 units, leaping 40.17% over the year-ago period.

In June, the monthly registrations of the locally-built Model Y came in at 50,457 units, edging down 2.49% from the previous year, but zooming up 57.78% from May.

Notably, the Model Y secured the top position among all China-made passenger vehicle models by June registrations.

For the Jan.-Jun. period of 2023, Tesla got a total of 204,158 Model Ys registered on the Chinese mainland, a 52.39% remarkable growth year-over-year.

With regard to regional distribution in June 2023, Shanghai topped other cities in China in terms of the monthly registrations of the made-in-China Model 3s, closely followed by Suzhou and Hangzhou.

As for the June registrations of the homemade Model Y, there were five cities with over 2,000 units registered each. Of those, Shanghai was still the champion with a registration volume of 6,633 Models Ys.
