The facility, located in the Lingang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, is Tesla's first Megapack battery manufacturing plant outside the United States. With construction beginning on May 23, 2024, the Shanghai Megafactory is designed to manufacture Tesla's commercial energy storage batteries for global markets.
With an initial annual production capacity of 10,000 Megapacks, equivalent to nearly 40 GWh of energy storage, the project highlights Shanghai's rapid development capabilities and China's advanced manufacturing prowess, contributing to a greener future worldwide.
Tesla's Shanghai Megafactory builds on the success of the company's Shanghai Gigafactory, which began construction in January 2019 and set a precedent by achieving construction, production, and product launches all within the same year. This new facility is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing Shanghai's energy storage industry and accelerating the region's green and low-carbon transformation.
