Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On Jan. 11, BYD launched its DM-i super hybrid technology that focuses on ultra-low fuel consumption.
According to BYD, the DM-i is a hybrid technology which is largely based on electricity. Powered by a battery pack with ultra-large capacity, a vehicle using DM-i is primarily driven by a high-power electric motor wrapped by flat wire. A gasoline engine is mainly employed to generate electric power when running at a high-efficient rotational speed and directly drive the car at an appropriate time. Compared to the vehicles adopting traditional hybrid technologies, the DM-i-enabled vehicles are less reliant on engine and fossil fuels, so that the fuel consumption will be significantly decreased.

The company said the DM-i super hybrid system is composed of such core parts as the 1.5L/1.5T Xiaoyun engine dedicated for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), the EHS (electric hybrid system), the blade battery specially designed for the DM-i system as well as AC/DC onboard chargers. Moreover, the engine, the battery, and the control systems of complete vehicle and electric motors are independently developed and manufactured by BYD.
The DM-i can enable an EV-only range of up to 120km, according to Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of BYD. The vehicles equipped with the DM-i system are available for both slow charging and fast charging.
At the same time, BYD also kicked off the presale of three new models armed with the DM-i system, namely the Qin PLUS DM-i, the Song PLUS DM-i and the Tang DM-i. They are about to hit the market in March 2021.
Fuel consumptions for the Qin PLUS DM-I, the Song PLUS DM-i and the Tang DM-i reach as low as 3.8L, 4.4L and 5.3L per 100km when lack of electricity. Additionally, they are capable of up to 120km, 110km and 112km on battery power alone.
