Gotion High-Tech’s subsidiary to build 20GWh battery base for producing VW’s unified cells
Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On July 20, Hefei Gotion High-Tech Power Energy Co.,Ltd., (Hefei Gotion), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gotion High-Tech, signed an agreement with the management committee of Hefei Xinzhan High-tech Industrial Development Zone, intending to build a power battery base dedicated to manufacturing Volkswagen's unified cells, according to Gotion High-Tech's WeChat account.

According to the agreement, the yet-to-be-constructed base will cover an area of 500 mu (333,000 square meters) and feature an annual capacity of 20GWh. The first phase of 10GWh is scheduled to be completed within 18 months.
The new deal was signed after Hefei Gotion and Volkswagen (China) Investment Company Limited agreed on July 12 that Gotion High-Tech will develop the German auto giant's first-generation unified cells for the volume segment.
Unveiled at the Volkswagen Power Day 2021 in March, the Volkswagen unified cell concept refers to a prismatic cell format adaptable to various chemical mixes and is compatible to all major upcoming innovations on both products and production process. The solution is set to be introduced to vehicles from 2023 and cover 80% of Volkswagen Group's electric vehicle models by 2023.
Based on the strategic partnership Gotion High-Tech and Volkswagen Group formed last week, the Hefei-headquartered company will also become a certified supplier for Volkswagen Group in China, supplying batteries to the latter's MEB (modular electric drive matrix)-based products in the future.
