Huawei applying for trademark registration for autonomous driving software

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Huawei Technologies Co.,Ltd. is applying for the registration of the trademark “Autoware”, according to business information provider Tianyancha. A local media channel revealed the new trademark will be used to name an open-source software for autonomous driving technologies.

Meanwhile, another trademark “Mobile Data Center” also shows a “registration-pending” tag. An industry insider said the development of autonomous driving technologies involves handling of numerous data about scenarios, roads, routes, road conditions, speed, safety, and other dimensions, hence resulting in the necessity of a powerful computing platform.  

According to Tianyancha, Huawei has been recently authorized to have the patent about a behavior planning method and behavior planning device for autonomous cars. Public information shows that the patent refers to an AI-enabled technical solution that enables autonomous cars to safely and rapidly pass intersections.

Huawei has reiterated many times that it will not build complete cars, or invest in any carmakers, but will focus on ICT technology to help automakers build good cars and become a provider of incremental components for intelligent connected cars.

According to Huawei, the company has selected BAIC BJEV, Changan Auto, and GAC Group as its strategic partners, supporting them in developing their own car sub-brands. The vehicles armed with Huawei's autonomous driving solution are allowed to bear the “HI” logo (standing for “Huawei Inside”) after being authorized by Huawei.

About a week ago, GAC Group announced the first all-electric model co-developed by its subsidiary GAC Aion and Huawei will go into volume production at the end of 2023. Positioned as a full-sized SUV, the vehicle will feature Level 4 autonomous driving functions, said GAC Group.
