Roundup: August NEV sales of China’s major OEMs

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- China's new energy vehicle sales in August fell 15.8% from a year ago to 85,000 units, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

Gasgoo hereby rounded up NEV sales volumes released by several major Chinese OEMs. Both BYD and JAC Motors suffered evident year-on-year decline in August NEV sales. But in terms of year-to-date sales, all of them accomplished remarkable increase over a year earlier.

BYD

BYD sold 16,719 NEVs in August, which made its Jan.-Aug. NEV sales aggregate 178,939 units.

Among NEVs sold last month, 16,100 units were PVs, down by 22.76% year on year. Of that, sales volume of PVs powered by all-electric system rose 12.35% to 11,005 units, while plug-in hybrid PV sales plunged 53.89% over a year ago to 5,095 units.

The automaker sold a total of 172,871 new energy PVs through August, a year-on-year surge of 56.7%. BYD's chairman Wang Chuanfu said at the 2019 World New Energy Vehicle Congress that BYD aims to sell 420,000 NEVs this year. However, only 42% of the target has been completed as of August.

BAIC BJEV

BAIC BJEV saw its sales volume in August grow 12.84% from the previous year to 10,705 units. However, the BAIC’s EV arm still faced a 14.42% decrease over a month ago.

For the first eight months, the EV manufacturer posted a year-over-year jump of 26.03% with 88,373 vehicles sold in total.

According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the BAIC EU series was crowned the best-selling locally-produced NEV model by both August and Jan.-Aug. retail sales. The deliveries of the champion model amounted to 10,000 units last month and totaled 68,013 units for the first eight months, skyrocketing 234.7% and 693.3% over the prior-year respectively.

Chery

Chery Holding said its NEV sales volume zoomed up 236.2% from the year-ago period to 8,194 units. The group's year-to-date NEV sales also soared 231% to 49,601 units.

The robust growth of Chery's NEV sales significantly boosted the group's overall sales performance. Amid the general slowdown in China's auto market, Chery Holding still boasted a 5.4% year-on-year growth in August with 65,200 vehicles sold. By the end of August, the automaker sold over 439,000 vehicles so far this year. Year-to-date sales of indigenous brands grew 5.9% from the previous year.

Geely Automobile

Geely Automobile said its total sales volume (including Lynk & Co-branded vehicles) in August, 2019 reached 101,223 units, a year-on-year drop of roughly 19%, but up by approximately 11% over the previous month.

Among vehicles sold last month, 7,897 units were new energy and electrified vehicles (NEEVs).

The hotter-selling NEEV models in August were the Emgrand EV, the Jiaji MHEV, the Xingyue MHEV and Geometry A, which accounted for around 73% of total NEEV sales. According to Geely Automobile, 2,529 units of the Jiaji MPV and 1,176 units of the Geometry A BEV were sold last month.

The group's year-to-date sales shrank roughly 17% from the previous year to 844,278 units, completing 62% of Geely's revised full-year sales goal of 1,360,000 units for the year of 2019. Of that, Jan.-Aug. sales volume of NEEVs skyrocketed 110% over the year-ago period.

JAC Motors

With 26,347 new vehicles sold in August, JAC Motors suffered a substantial decrease of 28.16% compared with the year-ago period.

All-electric PV sales of the Hefei-headquartered automaker also slumped 46.4% from a year earlier to 3,109 units in August. In June, JAC Motors witnessed its pure electric PV sales tremendously grow 429% year on year to 9,842 because dealers were strive to sell as much as vehicles before the NEV subsidy slash came into effect at the end of June.

Nevertheless, year-to-date sales volume of all-electric PVs still leapt 41.56% to 43,912 units

Great Wall Motors

Great Wall Motors sold 1,225 NEVs in August, which all came from its NEV brand ORA. Sales volume of the ORA R1 and the ORA iQ reached 1,108 units and 117 units respectively.

A total of 30,309 ORA-branded EVs were sold between January and August. ORA has by far sold 33,824 new cars since it was launched in August 2018.

Jan.-Aug. Sales volume of another NEV model, the WEY P8, was 644 units, tumbling 69.69% from the previous year. But its sales volume in August was zero.
