Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Internet giant Baidu is going to construct China's first large-scale route for the pilot application of 5G-enabled vehicle-infrastructure cooperative system in Hefei, capital of Anhui province, another significant project to China's Strategies for Innovative Development of Smart Vehicles.

The designated route is located at Hefei Binhu New District, where Baidu will build there multiple 5G-based application scenarios, sensing equipment for intelligent vehicle road tests, cloud-based control center, and revamp the roadside traffic facilities, according to an announcement released by Hefei Public resource trading center.

After the construction is completed, JAC Motors, Ankai and Volkswagen will conduct relevant road tests in the first place. The project is expected to attract more technology and automobile-related companies in a bid to form a sound ecosystem for ICV development in Anhui, which is pressing ahead with the deployment in 5G, AI and IoT areas.

In the meantime, the company announced on Mar. 24 it has won the tender for a similar program in Yangquan, Shanxi province, which allows Baidu to establish there a demonstration zone for the tests and applications of autonomous driving and vehicle-infrastructure cooperative system.

Under the program, the roadside system at the approved area will grow to be smarter with a complete system of sensing, data transmission, edge computing and signal collection. Based on Baidu's public cloud service, the cloud-based controlling platform for vehicle-infrastructure cooperation and autonomous vehicle monitoring platform are set to be deployed.

The epidemic doesn't retard Baidu's offensive in ICV field. It celebrated on March 9 the first spade cut of a Chongqing-based open testing base for autonomous vehicles jointly built with local government of Yongchuan district and Chongqing Academy of Metrology & Quality Inspection, targeting China's first-of-its-kind facility for Level 4 self-driving tests.
