Wholesale sales of Tesla China-made vehicles up 202% YoY

Beijng (Gasgoo)- Wholesale sales of China-made Tesla vehicles jumped 202% year on year to 33,463 units in May, and grew nearly 30% over the previous month, outselling BYD (32,131), SAIC-GM-Wuling (27,757) and SAIC Motor PV (11,049), according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). In the first five months, the automaker’s domestic cumulative sales stood at 128,588 units.

In terms of Monthly retail sales, Tesla ranked third with 21,936 vehicles sold, following SAIC-GM-Wuling (33,175) and BYD (31,908) and followed by GAC Aion (10,395).

And Tesla exported 11,527 Shanghai-made Model 3s to overseas markets. During the same period, SAIC Motor PV shipped 2,430 vehicles to foreign markets, BYD 223 vehicles, AIWAYS 143 vehicles. Last month, the Model Y, another locally-made model, saw a record-high monthly sales with 12,728 vehicles sold.

The overall retail sales of China’s new energy passenger vehicle segment increased by 177.2% year on year and 7.4% month on month to 196,000 units. According to the association, China’s new energy vehicle segment saw little production loss even though the industry faced many challenges including chip shortage. Thanks to strong market demands, the association raised its annual wholesale sales forecast of new energy vehicles to 2.4 million units from 2.2 million in April and 2 million in February.
